France – Nicolas Gonin Persan 2014

Domaine and vineyard
Nicolas Gonin is a young winemaker, formed at Dijon oenology school before a long apprenticeship in Sauternes, Bandol and California. A clear project in mind that divanta reality in 2005, when Nicolas started his own after replanted the land already belonged to his uncle and have rented other to arrive at a total area of ​​5.5 ha. At the base of his project is the discovery and protection of the Isère native vines.

The Domaine is located in the town of St Chef, in Isère. The climate in these waters is varied and reflects the influence of the Alps and the Rhone Valley. cold winters and hot, dry summers, all enriched by constant wind. The vineyards are located at an average altitude of 250 to 400 meters. On the dorsal face south and south-east (with clay soils calacrei) reds are grown while whites are placed in the highlands (at heavily calacreo terroir) more fresh and airy.

Viticulture follows the fairly simple principles: natural fertilizers, natural grassing controlled, all in accordance with the dictates of organic farming. The vineyards are planted with a high density of plants per hectare and trained by Fan (Mondeuse) and Guyot short for all other varieties.

Even in winemaking respect for nature and the grape it is up: only a light filtration and a small dose of sulfites at bottling.

The wine

The Gonin Persan 2014 is a Persan in purity. The grapes are harvested in early October on the average yield vineyards 35 hl / ha. The manual harvest followed by destemming and then 9 days of maceration with daily pumping over.
The Persian is a variety typical descendant of the well-Isère oldest Savagnin (with which it shares half of the gene). From this origin the Persian draws power, acidity and aromas of this grape (raspberry, citrus, licorice, pepper). It is a strong potential quality vine and suitable for giving long-lived wines but that was almost completely disappeared twenty years ago.

Food and wine pairing

The wine matches perfectly with lamb or red meats.


The Persian is a vine that unknown to me. What it will stay in the mind of this wine, and this variety is a marked scent of smoked able to overpower the freshness of red fruit, acidity and tannins. A wine that conceals a mixture of aromatic and olfactory notes very different from each other but whose union, honestly, I was not impressed. With each passing day the wine has become increasingly soft, the tannins have softened but the feeling of acidity, on the other hand, has increased.
Certainly it remains unique, at least in my experience.
I'd be curious to try it after a few years of aging in bottle or in blends with other varieties.
